Let's talk business

Ok so this post isn't about fashion or fun products but it does involve beauty and hair! It's about a little concept that turned big called Drybar. No cuts, no color, just blowouts for only $35.  Being in the beauty industry I was drawn to Drybar's concept from the beginning.  I came across Drybar in early 2010 around the time it's first Brentwood location opened in Los Angeles.  They had done such an amazing job on marketing and finding their niche that they even lured me as a hairstylist to want to drive 5 hours to LA just to check it out! (at the time I was living in Phoenix) Now almost two years later they still have it going on and have expanded really quickly.
Of course one opened up in Scottsdale, AZ after I left but I'm hopeful for a San Diego location :) After I researched some more about the company I realized they did their work. Not one detail went unplanned.  They had a team of designers, contractors, investors, event planners, marketing and branding experts, the list goes on. It's great being a business owner myself to instill the business motto "you can not do it all." I believe success can come in numbers and enlisting talented people who specialize. This can lead to great things. I'm still a one woman show doing all my own design, marketing, planning, not to mention being the service provider.  Watching the success of Drybar has given me a whole new take on a successful business model. It also shows if you market an experience, people will come.
I was really inspired after watching Bloomberg's The Mentor featuring Drybar.  Jamba juice CEO James White took a look at Drybar's business model and helped them with where to go from there. Expanding and franchising. I think Drybar is a simple concept making big headway in an economy where people normally wouldn't spend money on luxury.  As a hairstylist who has seen the drop in business this was a very uplifting company to take a closer look at.

Celebrity Crush times 2...The Rancics

Ok today was an exciting day for me. The loverboy and I attended a financial seminar put on by Giuliana and Bill Rancic.  It doesn't happen everyday that two of my favorite people are here in San Diego, blocks away from my house, giving financial advice for free!
Can I say it felt like Christmas!
Giuliana and Bill's reality show on E was a show loverboy and I would look forward to watching every week. Probably because they are so in love and just plain fantastic. We could relate to their relationship hilarity they ran into.
So, we went to the event not knowing what to expect, I more so expected it to be a plug about a book, or some credit card company preparing to sell but it really was just about giving amazing financial advice and tips to twenty somethings needing to know. Giuliana and her humor made it completely enjoyable to listen to their stories about combining bank accounts and making good spending choices. The real treat was being able to chat with them after one and one. I asked Giuliana what advice she had for me building my hairstyling business...I jotted those ones down. She looked gorgeous by the way in black skinny jeans, nude heels, a white blazer and the perfect Ombre highlights. Bill, his usual classically styled self, managed to steal my heart by asking loveryboy "Are you guys married?"... "It doesn't get any better than that, (pointing to me) Time to step up" LOL We had a good laugh :)
Happy Day

Lavender and Lovelies

I dream of cake stands in every color. On my recent trip to the eclectic town of Venice, CA I walked past Bountiful on Abbot Kinney and it was love at first site.  Cake stands stacked 6-8 high! They were all stunning. I can never run out of ways to use and display a cake stand.  I added to my collection with a small white porcelain one with scalloped edges but I could have left with them all. When I do decide to use it to display a cake I attempt to make I will look to the lovely lavender cake for inspiration...Looks easy right?

Spring Salad

Spring my favorite time of year. When all I crave is fresh salads and citrus fruits. This is one of my favorite light and crispy slaws with a just hint of ginger. I could eat this one everyday!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound baby bok choy (4 to 6 heads)
  • 1 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1 peeled apple, cut into matchsticks
  • 2 large shredded carrots
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated peeled fresh ginger
  • Coarse salt and ground pepper

Directions

  1. Halve baby bok choy lengthwise; rinse under cold water to remove grit. Cut crosswise into thin strips; place in a large colander, and sprinkle with coarse salt. Toss to coat. Top with a plate that fits inside colander; weight with a heavy object (such as a skillet or canned goods). Set aside in sink to drain.
  2. In a large bowl, mix apple, carrots, lemon juice, vegetable oil, and peeled fresh ginger. Add bok choy; season with coarse salt and ground pepper. Toss.

*I substitute the bok choy for cabbage when I'm in the mood for more crisp.
